Provinces and Territories
Nine of Canada’s ten provinces offer government-run compensation programs for victims of crime. The UN Declaration recommends that states provide financial compensation to victims who have sustained significant bodily injury or impairment of physical or mental health as a result of serious crime. In the following section, the existing programs for those who are victimized in a region where compensation is available will be discussed within the framework of victims’ needs. A detailed description of these provincial programs can be found in Appendix 3, and an overview is provided in Table 9.1.
